Welding failures occur because of overstress, corrosive environments, misuse, abuse, and from defective welds and/or welding. Many welds contain defects which are never of a consequence because although the defect is present, insufficient stress is applied to or carried by the weld. Welding defects can and do become consequential when stresses are high and/or alternating (fatigue type) stresses are present.
