Fridge Explosion

An eyewitness to the start of the Grenfell Tower fire in London indicated the “fridge exploded.” Yes, refrigerators can explode. In Europe, it has been reported that 90% of apartment refrigerators are ammonia and hydrogen working fluid refrigerators. Information on failures and causes of ammonia and hydrogen refrigerator fires and explosions can be found on our website under Consumer Product Failures.

In 49 years of professional practice in the United States, Dr. Jerner has never worked on a case where a fixed based, Freon working fluid refrigerator exploded. In the U.S. most refrigerators use Freon or the newer R-410A refrigerant.

However, J.E.I. Metallurgical has worked on 15-20 mobile, travel trailer, camper, matters where it has been alleged that an ammonia/hydrogen working fluid refrigerator exploded or caused a fire. Read about these cases and causes on our website under Consumer Product Failures or call our office if you need metallurgical assistance with refrigerator failure litigation.
