Heimlich Maneuver
I want to tell you a true story about someone saving my life about
six years ago. Yes, this did happen to me six years ago in
Washington D.C. My wife, Jann and I had gone to a seminar and a group of the attendee's had decided to go to a buffet lunch at a nearby hotel. We all went through the line and found a somewhat quiet table
in a remote section of the restaurant behind some privacy panels. As we ate, I was intent on the comments of one of the more informed persons at the table. Suddenly, I was aware that I had
swallowed a large chunk of zucchini squash and it was stuck. I drank some water, "to wash it down," but it remained stuck. I asked the waiter for some more water, but before he came back, I
knew I was having a real problem. Not wanting to embarrass myself or Jann, I got up and walked away from the table. I had walked about 6 or 8 paces and the waiter gave me the glass of water, another
gulp, but no relief. I began to gasp for air. I was REALLY in trouble! I bent over and the water came up, but I am now REALLY gasping. I look over for Jann and realize I am about to blackout
from lack of oxygen. Gasping loudly, I strained to see the woman I love. If I am going to die, I want to be looking at her as I am dying.
From behind me, I heard a voice say "relax" as he put his arms around me and made a fist and pressed into my upper abdomen.
Quickly, he pulled inward and upward and raised my feet off the ground----nothing. He set me down, readjusted his grip and again performed another Heimlich maneuver. Jann says "he shook me like a
rag doll!" Suddenly, (I won't gross you out with the details) the blockage "came forth."
I firmly believe that God, in his infinite wisdom, moved me from an obscure corner of the restaurant, behind a "privacy partition" out
into an area where a young Physician's Assistant by the name of David Berlin was seated. David was on a visit from Grove City, Pennsylvania, and had stopped for lunch as he was heading home. David was
well trained and was aware that someone nearby needed his help AND, he stepped up and did what was needed!
If someone in your office should choke, do you know how to save their life? If your child or grandchild should choke can you be the
"life giver?" For your convenience, I have a link to the Heimlich Institute web site. Please go there, print the Heimlich Maneuver instructions, post them in your lunch room and LEARN to do the
Heimlich procedure. The life you save may be a loved one or maybe even a total stranger.
Again, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU David! You were God's angel in my time of desperate need. Thank you for saving my life!
